UTV BATTERIES

Max and Janelle were sitting on the back porch when Gale stepped out of the Quonset hut, carrying her first aid kit. She pulled up a chair in front of Max and told him to take off his shirt.

“Right now?” Max looked over at Janelle.

“You heard her,” Janelle said. “Off with the shirt!”

“Okay, if you insist.” Max sat forward and undid the buttons. He slipped out of the flannel shirt and draped the garment over the arm of the chair. His chest hairs were as coarse as his black beard. A white bandage covered a shaved area just below his left clavicle.

Gale grabbed a corner of the patch and slowly peeled it off, revealing a red welt on his skin the size of a dime.

“So, how does it look?” Max asked.

“I don’t see any infection. You were lucky the nail only punctured muscle.”

“He’s got plenty of that,” Janelle said. “Mostly between the ears.”

“You wouldn’t be saying that if I’d shot myself in the head.”

“No, I wouldn’t.”

Gale examined the small scar on Max’s upper chest where she had removed the bullet after Max had been shot by one of the militants. “This healed nicely.”

“Thanks to you,” Max said. “Can I put my shirt back on?”

“Sure.” Gale looked over at the newly constructed dwelling they had put up for Sterling and Tonya. It had been over a week and still the couple hadn’t arrived. She saw Morgan and Grant come out of the building. They walked over and joined them on the patio.

“Grant and I have been talking,” Morgan said.

“About what?” Gale asked.

“Something isn’t right. Sterling and Tonya should have been here by now. When I left them, they were having some repairs done to their helicopter. Whatever it was, it should have been fixed and they should have been on their way.”

“Which could only mean one thing,” Grant said.

“Oh yeah, and what’s that?” Janelle asked.

“They had engine failure and crashed.”

“You mean all this time we’ve been waiting, you think they’re out there stranded somewhere?” Max said.

“That’s a possibility.”

“Then we should go look for them,” Gale said.

“That’s the deal,” Morgan said. “We have no idea where to start. Which means it would be impossible to search for them on foot.”

“What do you suggest?”

“We use the buggies. That way we could expand our search and cover more ground.”

“But we abandoned them when the batteries went dead,” Gale said, remembering when they had used the utility task vehicles to escape the valley during the volcanic eruption but were forced to leave the three dune buggies behind when they ran out of power.

“Yes, I know. That’s why I brought fully charged replacement batteries as I thought the UTVs would come in handy. I had no idea at the time we might be using the buggies for a search mission. A single battery is good for two hundred miles.”

“Not to mention we can recharge the batteries still in the buggies,” Gale said.

“Which doubles our range if we bring along backup batteries.” Morgan glanced around the group.
